Seattle Releases Survey of Residents’ Technology Use
Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and Councilmember Bruce Harrell yesterday released a report on the computer and Internet use of the city’s residents. The 2009 Information Technology Access and Adoption report, “Information Technology Access and Adoption in Seattle,” finds that Seattle continues to be a leading technology city in the U.S., with 84 percent of households having Internet service and 74 percent having high speed access, mostly via cable or DSL.
The report notes that Seattle still has significant disparities in adoption, however. While income and education are the biggest factors, significant differences in technology adoption were also noted due to age, ethnicity, language spoken and disability status. Residents of Seattle place a high value on high speed Internet service and want more, but say that affordability is an issue. More residents are accessing government information and services online, with the seattle.gov website showing steadily increased use.
