How fast is your home broadband connection? Is it slower than you expect? Are you really getting the speed that your Internet service provider advertises?  How does the broadband service in your community compare to other communities around the country?

There’s a new tool available at www.broadband.gov designed to help consumers get information to answer these questions. According to Ars Technica, 150,000 people took the test in the first week.

The Federal Communications Commission launched the Consumer Broadband Test to test the speed and quality of home, office or other broadband connections. The test tool includes options for the Web, Android and the iPhone. Consumers can report this data to the agency by entering street address, city and state on the form available at the test site. Consumers may also report broadband dead zones, which will aid the government’s effort to pinpoint areas in the United States where Americans are unserved or underserved by broadband access. With the data collected, the FCC plans to analyze broadband quality and availability on a geographic basis across the United States.

So try it out. Are you getting the service you expect?
